5 out of 5 stars Best MMO in years!   November 15, 2008
K. Philliben (Michigan)
Warhammer Online is a great game. It's only been out for a short time now and already has over 1 million subscribers. The RvR (or Realm versus Realm) experience take player versus player combat to a new level. There's a game here for everyone, whether you like to play alone, with groups against the game or with groups against other people.

They are already about to release several new classes and we're not even 2-months into release.

I already bought a 6-month subscription and I know that's only the start.

3 out of 5 stars At least they patch it often....   November 14, 2008

It's not a very good game, the combat isn't fluid and it's boring to level (yes, WoW leveling is 100x more fun....)

5 out of 5 stars Great, New Aspects for this genre   November 14, 2008
AF05 (Texas)
This game is designed well enough to capture your attention for many hours. The new aspects (tome, public quests, group friendliness, scenario, pvp, and more) introduced into the MMO scene are refreshing and will keep your attention away from the grind while still gaining considerable amounts of experience. If you are tired of your current MMO, this game is qualified to spend the money on.

2 out of 5 stars Boring, boring, boring   November 13, 2008

This game has so many flaws - I do not know where to start. Bad graphic, very poor sound, awful animation. However, if you are one of those who believes the only important thing in MMORPG is gameplay - there is a chance you can enjoy WAR for may be 12-15 levels (and there are 40 PvE and 80 PvP levels there). There are people who can stand the tedious repetitive grind for up to level 31. Well, it is your call whether you want to throw your money to check out if you are one of them.
If you look at all these positive reviews here - they all are done in the first couple of days after reviewers begin to play. Ask them if they renew subscriptions. You would be surprised how many quitted before free month was gone.
Cannot recommend this game to any one. Especially not to beginners.

P.S. Here is the best sarcastic (and very accurate) review of Warhammer I ever saw:
[...]

races/classes
Lets start with the character creation. This is where Warhammer really shines, They avoided the standard fantasy races and went with something completely new. Human, dwarf, dark elf , high elf, orc, goblin. I know what your thinking, two elf races is good but that's just not enough with the lack of elves in fantasy based mmo's these days. Blame the race called "chaos" that's not worth mentioning. It's just taking up space that could be used for another variation of elf.

The classes on the other hand were done very poorly. They replaced the classic warrior, priest, mage, druid, shaman with obscure ones like "engineer" and "white lion". I'm completely disgusted.

the world
The landscapes generally consist of dried out plains littered with dead trees and bushes. It does an amazing job to portray a war ravaged land. It looks as if anything that once resembled an interesting area was burned to the ground by chaos, go chaos! Thankfully nobody has desecrated the beauty of the greenskin region and their elaborate piles of mud.

scenarios
Lets start with one of the first scenarios available to you "nordenwatch". The objective of this scenario is to to take control of the three control points on the map which will build points for your team. The first one to reach 500 points wins the scenario. This is not to be confused with arathi basin in world of warcraft...which takes place in a basin. Nordenwatch doesn't even resemble anything close to a basin. Neither do the respective dwarf or high elf scenarios , the high elf one is on a hill!

Moving on, as you progress in tiers you move on to new scenarios. There are three scenarios in tiers 1 and 2, and six scenarios in tiers 3 and 4. Which sums up to quite a bit of options. The scenarios will get progressively harder as you climb tiers. For example in tier 2 you can participate in a capture the flag scenario which will later build skill for capture the bauble in tier 3 and capture the antique furniture in tier 4.

public quests
This is my favorite part of the game. Public quests are small areas of the map in which any player can jump in and participate for rewards. Public quests have three stages. Stage 1: kill 100 zombies, stage 2: kill 10 significantly harder zombies, stage 3: kill mega zombie. Don't like zombies? it's ok, all these quests follow the same formula so you can find one for orcs 20 seconds down the road. These quests generally take 10-15 minutes to complete with a reasonable amount of people. If your like me your probably thinking "15 minutes of zombies isn't enough". The best part is, nobody does public quests so it will take you hours by yourself! Everyone else is leveling through scenarios and solo quests.

But don't worry your hours of zombie killing will not go unrewarded! you will be rewarded with a bounty of single consumable potion and green item. If that isn't enough, for killing the maximum amount of zombies you will be rewarded with a "blue item". The healing bonuses (willpower) of this item will leave other healers in awe. They might even be so jealous as to comment that you are in fact not a healer but a melee dps class with no healing capabilities whatsoever.

quests
Long gone are the days of archaic quests that required you to travel to distant lands and took days, even weeks to complete. The true challenge lies in how many things you can stab within a 50ft radius. Thankfully they have stuck with the classic killboar method of questing. Remember though, Warhammer is a pvp game. All content outside of open rvr and scenarios was developed for no apparent reason and is not to be discussed.

open rvr
open rvr refers to keep sieges, battlefield objectives, random people you can't attack outside of designated areas because your guild accidently rolled on a "core" server. The battlefield objectives are flags surrounded by mobs of the opposing side. You can capture these objectives to earn renown(pvp) experience and add to the defense of your keep, or weaken the defense of theirs. Taking a keep can be a difficult task but results in a good amount of renown experience and after killing the keep lord he will drop more of your favorite healer gear. Defending a keep does not reward any loot but you do get to retain access to the merchants within the keep who will sell you an abundance of...stuff.

To summarize, I would say this game is not linear and boring as people say it is. The gear becomes drastically different as you level. As a 33 witch hunter I have been through MULTIPLE hats, and I look nothing like the other level 30 witch hunter I play with. His hat is maroon colored, mine is clearly burgundy. And the progression is not a grind. Even though most of the mobs in the game are actually greenskins/chaos/dark elves and your basically fighting against the same 10 classes in both pve and pvp for the entire length of the game.

2 out of 5 stars I honestly hate this game   November 13, 2008

I was really looking forward to this game but it has turned out to be a game that I really really hate. Everyone keeps saying give it time, just wait, they will fix the issue. BAH! Here is my beef...
I am a PVE person, I don't really enjoy RVR or PVP. PVE content is shallow at best. The Public Quests (PQ) are fun IF you can find enough people to play. Most of the time, only the first PQ has anyone and the rest are empty. So much for one of the best ideas of the game. There really isn't enough PVE action to justify spending [...] bucks a month trying to grind out a level. Want to play solo, not this game. You HAVE to RVR which means you are thrown into a group of strangers who couldn't play their class to save their sorry little lives.
RVR.. What a joke. Lv 1 characters are thrown in with lv 10s. Can you say not a chance. The same issues as you level up, characters 10 levels higher than you will beat the snot out of you. The healers will only stay alive is they have a wall of tanks to protect them but wait... No wall of tanks. Most people in this game care little about team work and couldn't work together to make toast. Healers try to DPS, another joke. Casters drop very very quickly. Not to mention, your own spells hurt you. What a horrible stupid idea. As if you weren't easy enough to kill, now you can do your enimies a favor and blow yourself up while trying to DPS. Did I mention what a STUPID idea?
I tried (I really really tried) this game for 2 months but I just have to walk away. It had great potential but only people who want to beat on other people will find any enjoyment in this game. Anyone else who wants depth, look elsewhere. (I know there isn't much out there at this time)
This is the only game where I had to log out after 30 minutes of RVR because of frustration and anger. I am a long time MMORPG gamer (EQ, EQ2, WOW, Vanguard, etc) and have enjoyed many years of fun games but this one truely will give me an ulcer if I continue to force myself to play it. You will find rabid fans of warhammer who will die trying to protect its honor, but when 5 of my friends who started the same day I did all left the game with the same issues, there is something seriously wrong. This is one of the few games and only MMORPG that I truly hate. Sorry warhammer, I will spend my money elsewhere.
On a side note, you would think mythic would know something is wrong when their paying customers are fleeing the game. The population levels are so low on the servers that they are offering free transfers to get people on the same servers.
