Gorgeous! November 30, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have 3 kids and they can destroy anything (and usually do). I was very very afraid to order this. Popup books don't even stand a chance in my house. It was just so gorgeous and my 4yr old daughter loves fairies so much. She even made a fairy farm in our yard after a nature walk. I just HAD to order it. It has been several months now (about 6 mths) and surprisingly this thing is in perfect condition still. The kids all adore it. We put it in a special spot and the kids get all excited and snuggle in on the sofa with me when I get it out. It is gorgeous and we all admire and cherish it in our family. This is VERY much worth buying!
Richly illustrated pop-up book on fairies November 10, 2008 Shasta's D (San Francisco, CA USA) This book is produced from the illustrations and text of Cicely Mary Baker (from England, 1895-1973). The book is large format (~11.5" x 10"). The sturdy pages are richly and fully colored and have a scrap-bookesque feel. There are seven spreads, all of which have some sort of interactive element. The first spread opens with a letter from Cicely explaining that her research shows there are five places where fairies make their homes; a small photo album is puruseable. The next pages cover the five places: In the Tree Tops, The Forest Floor, In the Garden, By the Wayside, and The Marsh. All of the spreads have pop-ups that show the environment described with fairies hidden about. The pop-ups either jump high of the page or encompass almost the entire page. Also, they all have at least one other element such as a puruseable booklet, a flip-the-flap, or a telescoping viewer. The last spread has another note from Cicely explaining she has captured a fairy with her camera; there is a bit of newspaper with a headline about the photo and a pop-up view camera with an animated fairy. The padded cover also has one of these animated images. From a paper-engineering perspective, the pop-ups in this book are spectacular and varied. They aren't simply different pictures and shape popping up in the same way. On one page they fold out in an accordian fashion, on another they pop vertically, and on another they spring slightly to create depth within the page. All pages open and close with easy. The text is mostly presented in a cursive font, which I found easy enough to read, but might present a challenge to a young reader. The content is fun. Each spread has the main explanation of the place to find fairies and lots of additional little tips and notes. Some of the notes help the reader find the fairies that are hidden in the pop up. I think this book would please a large audience: pop-up or fairy collectors, young children, older children, etc... This is not the book for someone who wants exhaustive coverage of different types of fairies or lore. The only slight fault I have with the book is that the view camera shows the image right side up when, in reality, it would appear upside down. This is a very nit-picky thing. If they had produced the image the was it really would be, most people would probably think it had been attached upside down by mistake. It certainly doesn't detract from the enjoyment of the book.
Keepsake Book October 6, 2008 Web Shopper (Michigan) I didn't think I would find a pop-up book crafted as well as Matthew Reinhart's work but this one rivals his skill. It is a beautifully crafted book to enchant children and awe adults and is a great addition to a keepsake book collection.
Most Beautiful Book September 30, 2008 Laurie E. Olson (Madison, WI USA) I love Cicely Mary Barker's Flower Fairies. I hope that they are living in my garden. That's why I bought this book: it gives good ideas on how to find them. The illustrations and popups are so beautiful, and if you look just right, you can find the fairies in their little garden homes. This is a book for both children and adults. Beautiful book August 1, 2008 O. Howard (Sacramento, CA) This is a gorgeous book. The pop-ups are intricate and there are lots of beautiful details. It encourages the reader to look closely to find things. It uses different fonts which is great for children learning to read and write cursive. Would definitely reccommend and buy again.
