THIRTIES MELODRAMANovember 3, 2001 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
The daughter of a poor but honest cardsharp, whose funeral expenses are paid by his friends, Lady Lee (Stanwyck) is determined to improve her lot. Eventually, she meets wholesome Joel McCrea and yearns for the respectable life..............Instrinsically, GAMBLING LADY is as absurd as it sounds but the honesty of Stanwyck's performance is so forthright that it brings conviction to the role in which she plays. Her performance is sure, colorful and convincing; she makes Lee a believable figure (which is no small feat). There is a quiet and forceful magic in Stanwyck's impersonation of the title role, and the movie moves quickly; she handles every emotional phase of the film story with utmost skill and holds the audience sympathy throughout the picture. Stanwyck looks every bit the gambling lady because of Orry-Kelly's chic wardrobe. The direction by Archie Mayo is fine. The production was well-mounted and the supporting cast all performed well. Joel McCrea was borrowed from RKO; they got Ann Dvorak in return.
