Blackjack 21 “Who would not want to go to Las Vegas and filthy rich, not by luck but by intelligence have to do this?” asks Kevin Spacey, and describing the appeal of the story of 21: Jack Black. Spacey says that although this is a dream of fantasy, the movie is actually inspired by a real group of MIT students in the’90s. “I loved the juxtaposition between the lives of these kids in Boston, where they were nerds with pencils in his pocket, and the life that was invented in Las Vegas, where they can become any person wishing to be.”
“Las Vegas can become whoever you want,” says Robert Luketic, director of the film. “The MIT geniuses become rock stars. Are given the keys to get to Las Vegas. They have access to many things that others could only dream of. ”
Long ago that the partner in the adventures of production Spacey, Dana Brunetti, had heard rumors about the MIT math gurus (one of the most prestigious universities in the U.S.) that had been devoted to use his enormous talent with a view very specifically: to beat the odds of black-jack and make millions in the casinos of Las Vegas. “Since I started playing black jack, I found that you can win,” said Brunetti. “One day, by chance, a friend of mine had a dinner with a guy who used to count the cards in one computer that was playing before. Then I thought it was a fantastic idea for a movie. ” Brunetti knew the story to interested Spacey, “but do not get anything until Ben Mezrich wrote his story for Wired magazine.”
Mezrich’s article appeared in the September 2002 Wired. In his story about the budding geniuses from Massachusetts Institute of Technology who had defeated Las Vegas at their own game, the story of Mezrich included everything from large doses of action, a surprisingly close eye on security personnel in casinos, and the advantages and disadvantages of the dazzling and glamorous lifestyle of Las Vegas. Mezrich’s article was a story that sounded like a Hollywood thriller. Immediately enthralled by the possibilities, Brunetti had contacted Mezrich, the author’s first impression was that one of the students it was a joke (which is not too rare in a student at MIT).
“I called a guy and told me:” Hello, I’m Dana Brunetti, Kevin Spacey, and I have to wait on the phone. ” And I said yes, of course. I joined their number and told him that he would call. Then I searched in Google “Dana Brunetti, and it was really working with Kevin Spacey!” Brunetti and Spacey bought the rights soon after the article.

At the same time, Luketic read the Wired story and thought it would be a great movie. “He had just returned from a tour in Europe to promote a very legally blonde, and was looking for a new project. By then I read in Wired magazine article on the team of gifted MIT students who beat the casinos in Las Vegas, but when I called, I learned that Kevin Spacey had already bought the rights for the project. It took some years and one day a script landed on my desk and I turned around to agreeing. I guess it had to happen like that. ”

The producer Michael De Luca explains that the book will awaken in all of us dream of winning at the casino in Las Vegas. “I’ve always liked the twenty-first day,” he said, “so that after reading the book, I tried to understand the method of the book. It is very difficult for anyone who is not a math genius, but it is also contagious. The few times you get well and to win a hand with a lot of pasta, you feel really good. ”
When the book arrived in bookstores Mezrich became a phenomenon, which remained in the list of over 59 weeks and sold 1.5 million copies sold. Translated into twelve languages, the book continues to record sales spectacular.
To adapt the nonfiction book by Mezrich to a movie, the producers made some changes to the story, but warn that the licenses no dramatic change which made the book so popular. “It’s a fun movie. Not intended as any docudrama “emphasizes Dana Brunetti. “We made some changes to the real story to make it work better as a movie for entertainment. First, at the present time and add the romantic element. But do not touch one iota of what makes the story so exciting, the tense action, high stakes, the use of false identities and bravado to reach the highest in the dizzying world of Las Vegas, winning at casino and making million. That’s what the book, and this is also what the movie.
Both the book and the film are inspired by the experiences of Jeff Ma, who studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology when he was picked to join the team of black-jack. Although Ma and his teammates had some of the heads of the country better equipped to succeed as a team needed something more. “I think the real reason that he asked me to join the group was because they thought it would be good not only because of my intelligence, but because of my behavior and my ability to enter a casino and sell,” he says.
Ma visited the set of filming on several occasions, both in Vegas and in Boston, and even makes a cameo as the delivery of letters from black-jack in the film. “It is a story that everyone would want to happen,” says Ma ‘Everyone wants to be that person who wins in Las Vegas, which manages to keep that lifestyle. ”
While owned by the MIT team, Ma was the main player, as his teammates, called observers, found an interesting deck, Ma sat and played with very high betting odds in your favor. Ma recalled that he had to overcome the natural parts of their personality to play the part very convincingly player. “We always fear, rational or irrational, that we caught,” he says. “I do not like anyone I yell. So, regardless of whether or not casinos could cause bodily harm, that fear is always hidden in some corner of the mind. ”
The MIT team has changed the lives of Ma, while not only belonged to him, but forever. “I think many people are engaged in work they do not like just for the money,” he says. “Thanks to the black-jack, I never have to do a job like that. I had enough money to do everything I wanted to train as water polo and then create a business of sports. Never will I accept a job that I do not like just for the money. And this is the best gift that the black-jack has given me. ”
Ma is currently forbidden to play black-jack (or twenty-one) in most of the casinos of Las Vegas. The casinos allow you to participate in other games, but not in what is a teacher. But what I miss most is not the least Ma black-jack, but the part of the team. “We were a group of 10 or 20 guys literally a kid, 21 years-that gestionábamos a multimillion-dollar company, trying to make it work and trying to make more millions. I miss the camaraderie. ”
To direct the film, the producers thought of Robert Luketic. The producer Michael De Luca says that Brunetti, Spacey and he was attracted by the vision of the film Luketic. ‘21 Black Jack covers many genres, many different tones. It’s a thriller with elements of action, comedy and romance, and is inspired by real events. Even with all these balls in the air, Robert was able to balance them in a unified vision. ”
“I had sent several romantic comedies, and I wanted to try something very different,” confirms Luketic. “With everything that Jack Black could offer 21-times of high stress, near accidents, and the fantasy come true to make Las Vegas a little of your own medicine, I found a fabulous opportunity.”
Kate Bosworth, who had previously worked with Luketic guy in your life (Win a Date with Tad Hamilton) said: “It has achieved the impossible balance of being extremely professional and serious when needed but still a child in the background I love that! I think that people with that kind of personality makes the best movies, because it is fun to get. ”
Kate continues: “Robert has a great sense of humor. When I’m with him, I think I can prove anything, not something that happens to me all over the world. “
